EMBARKING ON A JOURNEY

As we settle into our new home, we embrace the limitless possibilities and new challenges that lie ahead. Much like a bare stage just waiting for the echoes of stories to arrive, or the painter staring at a blank canvas ready to apply their first brushstrokes, Theatre East has been preparing for this moment. And we look forward to sharing it with you.

“A sensitive theatre, well oriented in all its branches, from tragedy to vaudeville, can alter a people’s sensibility in just a few years, while a decadent theater where hooves have taken the place of wings can cheapen and lull to sleep an entire nation.”
~Federico García Lorca

“A perfect stage is empty yet full of endless possibilities.”

Join us as we celebrate new plays and discover what can happen on an empty stage.
The series which was founded in 2016 continues to present innovative new plays moving beyond the confines of traditional productions. This season playwrights were commissioned to write plays with the simple theme of the empty stage. Fulfilling one of our core beliefs to make theatre more accessible to all, tickets are available on a suggested donation basis.
Running November 30-December 3

A painter must confront the unthinkable actions of her estranged husband after a teenage girl shows up at her studio door wanting to sit for a painting.

Theatre East proudly presents Julia Rae Maldonado’s World Premiere play, Muses, to the stage.

In keeping with our commitment to support playwrights and new works of theatre, Theatre East facilitates a writers’ group for the purpose of play development.

Writers from across the greater Theatre East community are invited to become resident playwrights and members of the Writers Room. Writers present 10-20 pages of works-in-progress to be read out loud and discussed by the group every two weeks. Meetings are attended by resident playwrights and Theatre East staff.

As part of our continued commitment to play development, the Play Room is where scripts completed in the Writers Room are read and discussed in their entirety. Work developed here will potentially feed into other Theatre East programming, including the Neighborhood Reading Series, 5X5 Drama Series, and Main Stage productions.

Readings are free and open to the public.
