Bringing theatre to the people! The Mi Casa program consists of short works that are performed in various spaces throughout the city. It might be in someone’s living room, it might be in a vacant store front, or even on a rooftop. Just one more way of bringing theatre to the community. (click for more information)

Theatre East produces provocative theatre of the highest quality through simple storytelling that addresses the most fundamental aspects of the human experience. We seek to shed light on those members of our community whose trials and strife are marginalized or misrepresented and to foster dialogues between them and the greater community.
Through provacative programming of New York, if not World Premieres, we hope to have the audience talking about the plays and the issues they address long after the lights come up.
Our 2009-2010 Season featured the New York premiere of EYE OF GOD by Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Nominee Tim Blake Nelson
2010-2011 Season featured the New York premiere of  THE SOLDIER DREAMS by Obie & GLAAD Award winner Daniel MacIvor.
One way we keep the dialogue going is with Audience Talkbacks with the cast & creative team of our mainstage productions. As producers, we always want to be in close contact with our audience — our community. Talkbacks serve as a way for us to truly sustain that relationship. It also serves to give an inside look into the production.
We also reach out to community leaders outside the theatre community who deal with those facing the challenges presented on stage in their day-to-day lives.
Our Reading Series allows us to bring more theatre to the community & helps us promote new plays as well as foster relationships with playwrights and their work. We launched the Theatre East Reading Series with Andrea Cinnavei's PRETTY CHIN UP in July 2010 followed by a workshop of THE SOLDIER DREAMS in September. In September 2011 we launched our regular Neighborhood Reading Series, in conjunction with our Third Monday Mixers, with LONE STAR and LAUNDRY & BOURBON.
The Neighborhood Reading Series is only part of our effort to make theatre accessible to all, because theatre started as a communal experience. As theatre historian Miles Krueger said “Going to the theatre wasn’t a luxury. It was as natural as breathing.”
Sadly for many in our community, theatre is no longer an experience that is affordable or available — especially with the recent severe hike in ticket prices. We find ourselves reluctantly raising ticket prices to meet the current budget demands but we have made a promise to ensure that anyone who wants to enter the theatre, can. We will accomplish this with discounted tickets for students, seniors & groups and for our community through our website and Facebook & Twitter pages — made possible by the support of our generous donors.
At Theatre East, we're all about community, no matter which side of the footlights you're on. We want to interact with our community not only around productions or readings, but consistently and often. The Third Monday of every month from 6:00-9:00pm, you can find Theatre East staff & company members, designers & actors, friends & supporters, congregating in the east bar of O'Lunney's Times Square Pub. We hope you'll join us for some casual conversation along with cocktails & great pub fare!
We believe theatre should play an active role in education. To that end, in the summer of 2010 we launched the NEW RITES COLLECTIVE.  With the severe decline in educational funding, we are witnessing the extinction of arts programs in our schools, robbing children and our future of imagination, curiosity & inspiration. We will do our part to correct that.
